Dr. Lourdes "Honey" Carandang (Philippines)- The pioneer of group play therapy for children in the country, Dr. Carandang has spearheaded many research and intervention projects for organizations such as UNICEF, International Labor Organization and our local Department of Social Welfare and Development. Mr. Hitoshi Shimamura (Japan) --- A play worker at the Sakai Adventure Playground Park in Tokyo, Mr. Shimamura is also Regional Vice President for East Asia/Pacific of the International Play Association and a member of the Japanese Adventure Playgrounds Association. He is currently involved with Play Tokyo, working for play opportunities affected by the Japan Tsunami. (Topic: Creating Inspiring Playspaces)

Professor Anita Bundy (USA/Australia) --- Known internationally for her work in occupational therapy assessment and intervention, Professor Bundy has published widely and has given lectures and courses on five continents. She is best known for developing theory and research on sensory integration and on play with children who have disabilities. (Topic: Popping the Bubble Wrap: Unleashing the Power of Play)

Professor Geraldine Naughton (Australia) --- A respected pediatric exercise scientist, Professor Naughton's extensive track record includes research grants and publications in musculoskeletal health of intensively training adolescents, injury surveillance of pediatric sports-related injuries, and innovations in family-friendly weight management support for overweight children. (Topic: Engaging Kids to Play)

Ms. Kay Gibbons (Australia) – Is Head of Nutrition Services at Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, and Honorary Senior Lecturer Monash University. She has a particular interest in issues involving eating and behaviour, including childhood obesity and eating disorders, and the role of children’s early learning about eating. Kay leads the ‘Filling the Gap’ education program, the nutrition and physical activity support for the ‘Kids – Go for your life’ project. (Topic: Nutrition and Active Play)

Dr. Maria Theresa Gustilo-Villasor (Philippines)--- A clinical psychologist by profession, Dr. Villasor is affiliated with the Psychological Association of the Philippines, the American Psychological Association, and the International Council of Psychologists. She also teaches at the Center for Family Ministries (CEFAM) at Ateneo de Manila University, and the Graduate School of Counselor Education in De La Salle University-Manila (DLSU). (Topic: How Adults View Play : Understanding the Developmental Stages of Play)

Dr. Esther Joos-Esteban (USA/Philippines)--- A facilitator of hundreds of parenting and teaching seminars the past 25 years, Dr. Esteban has published several papers on Values Education and Parental Verbal Abuse. She is currently an adjunct professor at Miriam College and at the University of Asia & the Pacific. (Topic: Media and Technology: A friend or a foe of Play?)

Mr. Marcus Veerman (Australia/Thailand) --- A teacher, counselor with 6 years experience teaching children in the outdoors, and 4 years working with teenagers from Hands-on-learning Play Space Design Challenge. Here, the finalists’ designs will each be brought to life on a 100-sqm area --- open to grown-ups and children alike, for one and all to experience and enjoy.

The 3-day festival also has a variety of fairs and exhibits designed for children and adults to fully immerse in the world of play. The World Toys Exhibit showcases the very best of games and toys from different countries around the world. At the Schools Fair, parents will get to know the different approaches to learning and programs available for their children. Then there are also the Toy-, Books-, Children's Nutrition and Children's Fashion Fairs for the general public.

Play Pilipinas 2011 is open to one and all. It’s about time that everyone take play seriously and now is the time!

Workshop Description:

How can music be used as a tool to heal ourselves and others? What is music therapy and how can it be helpful in dealing with individuals with AD/HD? Aside from focusing on these questions, this workshop will serve as an introduction to Music Therapy. Resource persons will share their experiences in using music to heal individuals of different ages and from different walks of life. This is an experiential workshop where participants will be asked to undergo a music listening activity. Participants are requested to bring art materials: papers, crayons, etc.

Resource Persons:

Christopher Franz A. Carandang is a practicing clinical psychologist for the MLAC Institute for Children and Families. He uses music to heal and connect with his various clients including those who have undergone trauma, cancer survivors, and those who have been diagnosed as having Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, and depression. He is also the music therapist of C.R.I.B.S. Foundation New Beginnings Center in Marikina where he conducts group music therapy sessions for the abandoned and abused adolescents. Chris also teaches Psychology courses in U.P. Diliman. He also composes and performs his own music.

Marisa V. Marin received her Bachelor’s Degree at The Catholic University of America in Washington DC in 1992 majored in psychology and minored in philosophy & religion. She later pursued her Masters Degree at the Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City focusing on Child & Family Psychology. In the year 2000, she got an excellent mark in defending her MA thesis entitled, Exploring the Use of Music Therapy for Filipino Autistic Children and graduated on the same year. For 4 years (1996-2000) she became the attending psychologist of the Hematology Unit of Children’s Medical Center Philippines or presently known as the Dr. Fe Del Mundo General Hospital, dealing mostly with patients with leukemia and their families. In 1998, she joined the team of psychologists of Dra. Honey Carandang which is now known as the MLAC Institute for Children and Families. She is the music therapist of C.R.I.B.S. Foundation New Beginning Center in Marikina where she conducts group music therapy sessions for the abandoned and abused adolescents. Her passion will always be her love for music that’s why playing the piano, listening to various music genre, singing and composing songs is an innate gift and healing which she is eternally grateful to God.

Keep Your Kids Safe Online by Web Safety For Parents Philippines (A Review)

Last August 14, 2010 at the Victory Center, Upper Level Promenade Mall, Greenhills Shopping Center, the members of Web Safety for Parents Philippines held its second free seminar regarding "Keeping Your Kids Safe Online". The speakers were Sonnie Santos, Carlo Ople and Chay Mondejar Saputil. The seminar covered the following topics:
•Malicious application on the loose at Facebook
•Kids Chat/Net Lingo
•Setting up open dns account to block harmful sites.






Sonnie Santos is a social web and human resource strategist, a micro entrepreneur and lecturer but most of all he is a father and a loving husband to his wife. He is also a future pastor.



Chay Mondejar-Saputil is Principal Consultant of Chimes Consulting focusing on the Digital Strategy Practice. Most importantly, she is the doting mother of her three children (two girls and one boy).



Last but not the least, Carlo Ople is currently an executive in the leading online gaming publisher in the Philippines - Level Up Inc. He also started his own consultancy company, Evident Inc., which specializes in New Media and Digital Marketing. He recently got married to his now beautiful wife, Mrs. Michelle Orosa-Ople.



I attended the seminar with the idea that this is something I have to learn soon especially that my son is already very familiar in using several electronic gadgets that have built-in internet access. Fortunately, my son would still prefer to read a book than surf in the computer; nonetheless, one cannot dismiss the fact that at this age and time computer literacy is a must for our kids and future generations.

So what I can do as a parent to help my son become a responsible computer user? That is the main question I looked for in this seminar.

In a nutshell, what I understood was that there are several parental restrictions and privacy settings we can set-up for children to prevent them from being exposed in certain material and people in the Internet that is not suitable for their age. I think the concept can be compared to watching a PG or R-rated movie. For example, for those who have watched the movie "Avatar" would say that it's a great movie especially with the amazing CG effects. However, as a teacher and a parent will you let your toddler watch this movie? It's not just because of the violent scenes but do you really think he can understand the story? In my opinion, I think this child wouldn't. To be honest, I didn't even allow my 9-year-old son to watch it yet although most of his classmates (according to my son) claimed they watched it with their parents. Don't get me wrong. It's a great movie but I'll save it for another few years. For now, I'll let him enjoy movies such as Fantasia and Ghibli movies like Totoro and Ponyo.

Honestly, the parental restrictions Chay discussed caused me to nosebleed. I do update my anti-virus every week as per my husband's advice but I have no idea how to protect my child or myself from spywares, phishers and other malicious programs in the computer. I left that sole responsibility to my husband. So when I went home to discuss the things I learned from the seminar using my favorite terms such as "You know hun those "thingies" and "watchamacallits". I was somehow not surprised when he got the correct names of those programs more than I will ever do.

I guess the most powerful talk from me at that time is Mr. Ople's personal recount of how he overcame his addiction in on-line gaming. I have seen the same issues from my personal relations and also in my students which caused a lot of concerns both in the school and at home.

Hence, I left the seminar hopeful and inspired that in my own way I can help spread the word of these advocates to the academe where I belong. We need more people thinking that there is an abundance rather than scarcity. This country needs more people who will divert from the crab-mentality that has suppressed just too many could-have-been successes in life because we were afraid nothing will be left for us. This people gave out information some people would have charged you an amount. They give access to their materials how to apply the web safety precautions they discussed for free. They give prizes to the attendees who won in their raffle and we have an overflowing coffee and a very comfortable seminar room. All because this people believe in the notion that if you believe in something and you act on it, it will happen.

I highly suggest that you attend their upcoming seminars. Let's be realistic something like this will not remain free for a long time unless I guess if they have benefactors who will subsidize the fees for the attendees all the time. So again act, now sign-up for the seminar and educate yourself how can you offer web safety protection to your child.
